Strictly Equine Zorbate is an excellent blood boosting supplement furnishing folic acid, Vitamin B12 and folate that are essential for the production of healthy red blood cells and their ability to deliver oxygen and nutrients to working muscles. As cardiovascular conditioning improves, total blood volume, red blood count, hemoglobin levels will also increase to enhance performance.

Blood is essential to life to deliver oxygen and nutrients to cells and remove metabolic waste. Red Blood Cells (RBC) are one of the 3 types of blood cells that make up blood. The other two are white blood cells also known as leukocytes and platelets also called thrombocytes. At rest, oxygen delivery or ventilation rate is about 80 liters of oxygen per minute compared to 1800 liters per minute at a fast gallop (heart rate 150 bpm).

RBC are the most abundant blood cells and in a horse makeup about 8-10% of body weight or 40L for 500 kg horse. RBC contains an iron containing protein called hemoglobin to which oxygen will bind to. Hemoglobin is what gives RBC their red colour and once oxygenated, RBC will deliver oxygen to muscle cells to transform energy from carbohydrates, fats and protein to ATP (adenosine triphosphate) energy, which is the form of energy that muscles utilize.

A lack of hemoglobin, often caused by iron deficiencies, blood loss, hemolysis or destruction of RBC will limit the delivery of oxygen to working muscles, compromising both performance and health.

Red Blood Cells are produced in bone marrow and have a limited life span of 100-120 days and must be replenished in order to maintain adequate blood volume.  Iron, Vitamin B12, folic acid is required for the production of healthy red blood cells and in cases when the production of red blood cells are compromised, or if blood volume is below 30%, anemia can result.

Horses with anemia will have a sluggish metabolism, poor exercise tolerance, pale gums, poor hair coat, and difficulty gaining weight, reduced appetite and risk of heart damage or cardiomyopathy.

Causes of anemia can result from nutritional deficiency such as lack of iron, folic acid and B12, blood losses due trauma or injury, chronic inflammation, prevalence of gastric ulcers, EIPH (equine induced pulmonary hemorrhaging), infectious diseases (equine infectious encephalitis), consuming maple leaves*, long term use of NSAID medications, kidney disease, and bone cancer.

Strictly Equine Zorbate is an excellent red blood cell booster, furnishing iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid to offsetting the risk of anemia and increased need for red blood cell production and improved oxygen delivery for highly metabolically active muscle cells.

During exercise the cardiac output can go from resting heart rate of 35 bpm to over 200 bpm at a fast gallop, delivering over 300 litres of blood per minute to fulfill the oxygen requirement which is approximately 35 times greater than resting.

*Maple leaves are highly toxic to horses. Horses that ingest partially dried or wilted maple leaves can die within 18-24 hours of ingestion. The toxic ingredient is believed to be gallic acid and destroys red blood cells or hemolysis. The ingestion of 1.5-3gm of leaves per kg of body weight (0.7-1.5 kg for the average 450-kg horse) will cause fatal hemolytic anemia. Bob Wright - Lead Veterinarian, Disease Prevention, Equine and Alternate Species/OMAFRA; Todd Leuty - Agroforestry and Horticulture Specialist/OMAFRA
